Pokémon

As a young child and even as an adult today, I always enjoyed collecting Pokémon similar to my father's interest in numismatics. Upon first glance, it was simply a form of entertainment that kept my siblings and me from quibbling with one another. However, my continuing fascination with Pokémon vis-à-vis Pokémon Go has encouraged me to consider the other impressions of this hobby. More than anything, Pokémon encouraged me to read prolifically as an elementary school student even if I wasn't reading books. The older versions of the game had no spoken dialogue, owing to the worldwide distribution of Gameboy cartridges, so each step in the journey presented new opportunities to catch Pokémon and expand my lexicon. I may be imparting too much of my education to a world full of imaginary monsters, but one could easily say the same of the Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series. Today, Pokémon Go gets me outside if for no other reason then to "hatch eggs." Unfortunate...

Old Photos

Image
As my dad and his family make their way to the the Philippines, he stopped by this weekend to visit as well as drop off a few things including all of the old photos. After they left, we quickly stopped by Best Buy to pick up the Epson V39 scanner which, after some careful troubleshooting, I recommend. Here are some of my favorites so far with plenty more to come.

About a year ago, Caity and I met a backyard breeder we found on Craigslist at a Waffle House in the middle of nowhere and added a new, furry member to our family. While she spent a short stint in Florida with Caity's parents after some confusion around my newfound allergies, she's back with us in North Carolina and she keeps us ever so entertained. Growing up, I never had a dog and didn't understand why anyone would commit themselves to the unnecessary, often unwieldy, responsibility of caring for another being's livelihood. But a few months in, I've learned that there's something special about the relationship between man and dog. We love our dog and she loves us back. And while there were certainly low points like when she was potty training, I can't imagine living without her. Sophie is a good dog and she makes us better humans.

When Your Parents Move Away

For those of us who are young adults such as myself, we're more familiar with the idea of moving ourselves away from home. However, there always remains the possibility of returning to familiar places and familiar faces in accordance with the passing of holidays and other marked occasions scattered throughout the year. But there then comes a time when your parents move away. My dad and his family are soon making their way to the Philippines to start a new life. While I'll miss him and his family, it's the right move for him, Luz, James and Olivia and I'll think they can only gain from the experience. It's a bit strange to think that I'll never return to that house in FL during which I spent my middle and high school years, learning about the world and learning about myself. Perhaps in these times where the world is flat and everything is accessible via the interwebs, I'm placing too much emphasis on a single point, a single place in space.  As we ...

Blog Name Change

I recently changed the name of my blog from stevenevens.me to evens.co . The change is slight, but recognizes that I'm no longer a one-man operation - I'm now part of a team. As life changes, so will this blog. And while I've sometimes struggled in finding topics about which to write, marriage brings an abundance of noteworthy and varied ideas. Hopefully, I'll have a few photos to share from the wedding in a few weeks, but until then, I've put together a rough outline of things I intend to write about. Feel free to send any additional suggestions to steven@evens.co . Marriage and Finances Marriage and Work Marriage and Health Marriage and Family Marriage and Friends Marriage and Personal Hobbies

Only Three More Weeks

Three weeks from today, I'll be saying "I Do" and I couldn't be more excited! How the time flies.
