Pokémon

As a young child and even as an adult today, I always enjoyed collecting Pokémon similar to my father's interest in numismatics. Upon first glance, it was simply a form of entertainment that kept my siblings and me from quibbling with one another. However, my continuing fascination with Pokémon vis-à-vis Pokémon Go has encouraged me to consider the other impressions of this hobby.

More than anything, Pokémon encouraged me to read prolifically as an elementary school student even if I wasn't reading books. The older versions of the game had no spoken dialogue, owing to the worldwide distribution of Gameboy cartridges, so each step in the journey presented new opportunities to catch Pokémon and expand my lexicon. I may be imparting too much of my education to a world full of imaginary monsters, but one could easily say the same of the Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series. Today, Pokémon Go gets me outside if for no other reason then to "hatch eggs." Unfortunately, I haven't hatched a Snorlax yet.

I enjoy Pokémon and I look forward to sharing the hobby with others in the years to come. Goodness knows it would be fun to play with my kids someday it it's still around.
