Shoes and Laces

I used to think skills and capital were like right and left shoes: one’s not so useful without the other. Now I think of capital like the shoes and skills like the laces: if I have capital, i can jog a good pace, but I can’t really run unless I have the skills. But first I need the shoes. (And cash can buy me both.)

In his recent paper, Chris Blattman discusses simple cash grants to those in developing countries and uses one of the finer economic analogies I've ever read. It's a quick but informative read and I highly recommend you give it a glance, regardless of your discipline. It's a big world out there, but you're part of it.

Blog Name Change

I recently changed the name of my blog from stevenevens.me to evens.co . The change is slight, but recognizes that I'm no longer a one-man operation - I'm now part of a team. As life changes, so will this blog. And while I've sometimes struggled in finding topics about which to write, marriage brings an abundance of noteworthy and varied ideas. Having Dogs

As a kid, I'd never had a pet. The idea of having an animal roam about your home felt like a silly concept and a wasteful use of time and resources. Over the last few years with our two dogs, Sophie and Khloe, I've found enlightenment. Our dogs give us a lot of joy and companionship, particularly when either Caity or I would otherwise be home alone due to our work schedules or other outside commitments.  To end in the most cliché of ways – I couldn't imagine our life without our two furry family members.
