Update
This past week has been a incredibly trying and difficult one, but I'm happy to say I've grown in ways that I never thought I would.
My coursework ranges in difficulty from SLS2301 to MAC2312, but I'm pushing back with hours dedicated to studying and practice. By far, my favorite class this semester will be IDH3116, Poetics of Justice. The lectures, discussions, and assignments challenge precedents, requiring students to observe situations from varying perspectives and offer explanations for personal conclusions. I find this to be fantastically gratifying. As for my other classes, their nature is didactic and linear; it's a race to the finish.
My (attempted) involvement this semester is also far-ranging, soon to settle on a few activities. I've applied and interviewed for membership into multiple organizations, arriving at varying degrees of success and failure. As a first-year student, such results should be expected and I try not to take them too personally. To those who find themselves in similar boats, let us hope and pray that such determinations are made with our mental and physical well-being in mind. Perhaps the time is not now.
My work commitments in research and clerical assistance have been incredibly time-consuming. Twenty-four hours weekly is a troublesome obstacle in the pursuit of quality academics. Nonetheless, receiving a paycheck yesterday was more than ideal. There are growing pains in both these areas, but such are the means to greater ends.
My personal life? Relatively nonexistent, but I was overjoyed to meet with my mentor and grand-mentor yesterday. Few will understand how much that meant to me, to sit down, decompress, and get some guidance on where I'm going. Truly, times like those are not easily forgotten. As for you, congratulations on finding someone new. I'm genuinely happy that you connected with someone that means something to you. I only have your best interests at heart.
Times have been tough. Eking out survival during application season is something new to me. However, I only look with confidence toward the horizon. In no attempt to avoid appearing cliché, "The night is darkest just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming."
With love, Steven.
P.S. As for the featured image, it brings me a lot of joy. It's a good feeling to know that you have support when you need it.
