College Week 1

I successfully survived (and even thrived in) my first week of college at the University of Florida.

On Sunday, I arrived home from Orlando and took a shower. Soon after, I completed my first load of laundry and went to look for Weeks of Welcome activities. I watched a game of kickball, played cornhole, ate some pizza, and met a miniature pig. I went to the Graham Area Council General Body meeting later that night and went to bed early, excited for my classes the following day.

On, Monday, I began my Spanish class (SPN1134) at 8:30 AM. We quickly went over the syllabus and then were ushered out. I made for Library West to get some reading done and prepared my notes for Calculus class (MAC2311) at 11:45 AM. The class was fast-paced with minimal review of the syllabus. We sped through Lecture 1 as quickly as possible but it went unfinished. That evening I attended the Class of 2015 Welcome Reception in the Emerson Alumni Hall hosted by the UF Student Alumni Association. I was a little disappointed that I didn't get a picture with Albert or Alberta, but I met some new people and had a lot of fun.

On Tuesday, I had breakfast and went to my First-Year Florida Pre-Law class (SLS1102) and was pleasantly surprised to find that we would not be using materials from the Common Reading program. The course would be discussion-based and written assignments would be at a minimum. Later that afternoon I did some major work for my Spanish class and finished its respective homework for the week. In the evening, I tried to attend a Model UN meeting but nobody showed so I went to the Cinema and saw Thor. I thought it was a pretty good movie.

On Wednesday, I had my Spanish and Calculus classes at the same times and then went to the gym in the afternoon. The Rec Center was nice and I got in three miles on the treadmill before I went to my residence to study and enjoy the rest of the evening.

On Thursday, I had the discussion portion of my Calculus class. Larie was the designated Teaching Assistant (TA) and she was very nice. I went to her office hours during fifth period and straightened out my understanding of some rudimentary precalculus. Following, I made my way to the Reitz Union Center and bought a poster that was used for the ending of a That 70s Show episode. I have yet to hang it up but I think I'll just take it home and hang it there. That evening I attended the Graham Hall Ground Floor meeting and met some of my neighborhoods. All the guys on the floor seem pretty cool and I had Jimmy John's for dinner. Afterwards, I went to my UMMP Match and Mingle event and met my mentor, Mr. Braun. He's a very talkative guy and is knowledgeable about the University. He helped me determine three goals for my freshman year: maintain a high GPA to secure scholarships, communicate when in distress, and assimilate into the Gator Nation. I thought the last goal was a very good one.

On Friday, I had my Spanish and Calculus classes and all went smoothly. I did some homework in between classes at Library West and had lunch with Vinnie and Emily afterwards. I went to the gym to get some cardio on and did another three miles on the treadmill. I went to Gator Nights that evening and hung out with some really cool kids from Lakewood Ranch High School; Emily, Kaila and Chas are a fun group of people and hope we go to Lake Wauberg together sometime. I got home after midnight that evening and watched an episode of Criminal Minds (made me think of Ashley, gosh, I miss her).

On Saturday, I woke up and went to Calculus study session at Library West. I had a Grande Green Frappuchino which really perked up my morning. Attendance was few but I think we worked better because of it. I then came back and interviewed for GAC, went to Walmart, went to Subway, and came home.

I'm about to leave and see Paranormal Activity in the Graham Gallery. Overall, I had a great first week and hope to continue the momentum. I miss many, many people who are miles away, at home. Especially you, Ashley. But I may be coming back this weekend to attend the LRHS-BRHS football game on Friday night. Stay tuned for updates.

P.S. I'll be posting updates weekly on Saturday evenings, at a minimum.

P.P.S. I won't be editing these entries for punctuation, grammar, or spelling. I'll simply type and post. Just sayin'.
